No Ifs, Ands or Putts

No Ifs, Ands or Putts
Decided to get your workout on the golf course instead of at the gym? Read on to learn how this local boutique takes "golf chic" beyond the plaids and argyles of yesteryear.

The word "golf" might conjure up visions of old white men wearing pastels and drinking Scotch — or maybe due to his recent domestic dispute, your thoughts of golf might wander to Tiger Woods getting caught red-handed in a salacious scandal. But with either image, there is one thing missing — female golfers! Golf-Chic Boutique Owner Beth Underhill is here to let all you ladies know that golf is NOT just a man's sport, and it could be your new passion.

Launched in 2007, offering only golf accessories, the Golf-Chic Boutique Web site "started as a result of my love for golf," Underhill says. And while Golf-Chic is still mainly a web-based operation, they went brick and mortar in spring 2008. (Check out the boutique located at 5055 Wooster Road.) At the same time, Golf-Chic expanded their inventory to include apparel, more accessories and even personal putting greens!

As a rule, golf attire stereotypically has been an unflattering combination of plaid pants, sweater vests and flat caps. But these rules no longer apply, and what you wear on the greens can be just as fun and fashionable as what you would wear on a day-to-day basis. "Golf dresses are very popular recently, not only for playing golf, but you can wear them out running around or for a casual lunch," Underhill says. Check out this mod print shift dress that easily could transition from the golf course to shopping or cocktails!

With your new golf ensemble in place, you'll be ready for 18 holes, but don't forget the icing on the cake — Golf-Chic intimates! With sassy sayings like "Kiss my Putt" and "Tees Me" spelled out on the garments in sparkling rhinestones, these Golf-Chic Boutique exclusives will have your derriere feeling just as sporty as the rest of you! Inspired by decorating bras for Cincy Chic's Bras with Flair on the Square event, Underhill says these foundation garments that Golf-Chic calls "Divot Dainties," will put a twinkle in your eye and on your underpants!

With female athletes having a more prominent role in golf through the popularity of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, Underhill has found that more local women are getting involved and hitting the greens in recent years. And while looking good isn't the point of the game, it doesn't hurt!

Bridging the Gab between Fashion and Sports Performance Apparel

The roles women have played in society have changed a lot through the years. These days many women to are working full time jobs, raising children and are somehow finding the time to escape for a game of golf. The housewives of yesterday have been replaced by the "do it all woman" of today. Thanks to those women paving the way those once male dominated arenas of predominately male business and sports world have increasingly large female presence. These "do it all" ladies need a fashionable "do it all" wardrobe that can keep up with their busy lifestyles. With a business casual dress code, clothing lines are offering styles that are deemed appropriate for a number of settings. Today, that same woman can easily transition from the office to a number of activities without having to change a single piece of clothing.

Modern day designers are recognizing the need for pieces that women can get more mileage out of, and are meeting this demand with options that are very versatile, functional, and fashionable. Many labels are utilizing more performance friendly fabrics that incorporate stretch and the ability to breathe some even offering UVF protection. Performance fabrics have come a long way since the stiff polyesters of yesterday; introducing spandex blends and fabrics such as moisture wicking bamboo and jersey cotton that offer a softer look and feel making it difficult to decipher between a performance and non-performance garment.

Fashion is finding a place in the sports world like never before. At the Fifth Annual Caribbean Classic Golf Invitational (CCGI) Celebrity Tournament and Charity event in Jamaica this past June, leading designers showcased upcoming collections, and marked the first time that a fashion runway has been specially designed and incorporated during a sporting event.

Many women's golf and tennis lines are on board aiming for a fashionable yet functional look on and off the green and court while meeting the demands of the modern woman. With the recent influx of women of all ages making headlines in the golf world, the sport is no longer considered just an older woman's pastime. This fact is making it possible for specialty women's golf lines to take a more fashion forward approach to their designs, turning the fairways into runways. High end designer DKNY has crossed over into women's golf with the leader in women's golf fashion Jamie Sadock guiding their team of designers to produce an exciting , colourful, and fashionable line. With the price of clothing seemingly always on the rise an added advantage to this trend is the versatility of these garments, making it possible to wear your golf apparel on days that you don't even play. Companies like Trigelle and Lela are active wear golf lines that have successfully merged function with fashion for a look that easily carries over into everyday wear.

With all of these versatile clothing options making their way into our closets, you have to wonder what the future holds for women's fashion. Are all of our wardrobe needs going to be met one day with a single uniform garment like straight out of a scene from Star Trek? Anything's possible...

June is the Best month for Women Golfers!

Have you ever tried to introduce a female friend or relative to the wonderful word of golf, only to be given a handful of excuses as to why they’re not ready to share your love of the game? I’m sure a few of the excuses you may have heard is that their intimidated by it all or perhaps the cost of picking up a new sport is hindering them, and of course one of the biggest excuse you’ve heard is probably that they just don’t have the time. Just like any sport, if you’ve never done it before, it can be intimidating. You don’t know all of the rules and etiquette of the game, how to properly utilize the equipment, even knowing what to wear can be daunting task if you’ve never done it before.
Well, you and those ladies are in luck, because June is Women’s golf month. That means participating golf courses and retail shops are giving free lessons (any level) and special discounts all over the country. This is really great for all women golfers, but it may just be your secret weapon to tip the scale in your favor to drag Miss apprehensive to the course. And, once she’s there realizing what makes golf such an amazing sport, I’m positive she’ll miraculously find the time to do it again and again… There’s no better time to be a woman golfer (beginner or novice) than June!

Go to www.playgolfamerica.com to find participating courses and retailers in your area.

You Can Still Get Away

Oh, the economy. It’s definitely affecting everyone’s lives these days. Even if you’re fortunate enough to not have to make cutbacks at the moment, I’m sure you’re still thinking about ways to save money.
One industry that is seeing some major cutbacks is the travel industry. People just aren’t able to get away like they used to, forcing them to look for places closer to home to get away from it all. Your local golf course is a great place to make a quick escape! Don’t have a membership anywhere at the moment? Now is the perfect time to shop around. Many clubs are offering big discounts on rounds and memberships to boost business. And ladies, June is Women’s golf month which means further discounts and free lessons at clubs all over the country for women!
The next time you’re gearing up for a game, treat it like a vacation. Get the girls together for a girls trip, wear something fun (and functional of course) like you would on a trip. Once you’re there, leave the phone in the car and make sure to take the time to relax and take in the beautiful landscape. Before too long, you’ll forget that you’re only a few miles from home and that you had to skip Fiji this year…
